Back by popular demand for the 10th year!

Hot Chocolate Nutcracker 10th Anniversary!

I am happy to inform you we will be presenting the “Hot Chocolate Nutcracker” at Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center as our annual theatrical production.
The letters, artwork, and creativity that this work inspired in young people who attended last year’s performance is beyond remarkable. So I encourage you to sign up early as we were filled to capacity last year with a long waiting list. School performance will be on December 4th. The show runs for 90 minutes and starts promptly at 10:00am.
Following the idea of the original, it’s Christmas Eve and the Johnsons are having a grand party. The Christmas gifts are shared and young Kara receives a Nutcracker filled with hot chocolate – her favorite. She falls asleep and the journey begins when the Nutcracker comes alive!
Three wise cracking mice: Harvey, Schmink and Buckey take over the story. They are the three stooges incarnate from N.Y.C. who call themselves “The Real Rat Pack”. They go to many new lands of wonder: Candy Cane Land, Egypt, the Indian Rainforest/Bollywood, Jazzland, Russia, and the Land of the Kimono Dolls. With dazzling choreography, music and costumes, this is a holiday theater experience that all ages will enjoy!
I have taken tradition and given it a new context, fresh lively characters, new music and spectacular dancing to bring a vibrant, unforgettable theater experience for all ages to enjoy. Don’t miss this wonderful production created just for you!!
Hope to see you there,

Debbie Allen

Debbie Allen’s Hot Chocolate Nutcracker was an amazing display of dance and song! What a unique take on the traditional holiday story of the Nutcracker. The talent that was on display, from the young girl who portrayed “Cara” to the Pas de Du to Candy Cane Lane to the celebration on Bourbon Street, it was all fantastic! I am soooo glad that this wonderful production will be performed again next year. What at awesome way to keep the arts alive in our community and in the lives of our young people. Keep up the good work Debbie and DADA!!
Favorite moment: I loved the ballet section and, most especially, the tap-infused journey to New Orleans.

I absolutely loved it! It was a great way to kick off the Christmas season with my family. The way the different countries were showcased was brilliant. The performance helped me to see the value of the arts and why it’s important to continue to provide our youth with opportunities such as DADA. My family & I will be back next year & we’re even looking into other productions put on by DADA!

hot and delicious… every drop!

So relaxing the performers with the beautiful music. I wish my other family members could have attend, but due to a death in the family they could not attend. I am hopefull that maybe next year they can see this wonderful performace. I loved the angel scene, it was so gentle and gliding. The male dancers have such strong legs in the scene that required them to fully expand their legs and hold for several minutes. It was a soothing, peaceful, vibrant performance. I took Marquis, my exchange student from China. He loved the performace and will see it again next year. He loved it so much that he purchased a sweatshirt. All in all I am happy have seen Debbie Allen’s version of “HOT Chocolate Nutcracker. “

There are not enough positive adjectives to describe our experience at the Hot Chocolate Nutcracker. It defied imagination. The children, the costumes, the adults, the singing, the comedy, the different cultures that were represented, the dreams, the DANCING, the MUSIC!!!!!! THE MAGIC OF IT ALL.
Thank you Ms. Allen and all that were involved in producing this outstanding, cultural event. Our family will be talking about our experience for months to come…………and we plan to attend next year with an even larger group.
Favorite moment: butterflies in the audience Indian dancers, African scene, candy cane dancers, New Orleans tap dancer
